The Buckingham County Primary and Elementary Schools K-5 Project has officially received LEED Gold certification from the United States Green Building Council’s LEED for Schools rating system!
The school campus prompts healthy decisions and is made with healthy materials. Materials and furnishings were chosen for their health-promoting qualities – in terms of specific sustainable features as well as conglomerate physiological and psychological healthful effects. Throughout the campus, natural daylight from windows is supplemented with environmentally-friendly Solatube® daylight harvesting found in ceilings and light louvers in classrooms. A water-source heat pump system supports energy-efficient heating and cooling of the school, and innovative stormwater strategies integrate green space, native landscaping, and natural hydrologic functions to generate less site runoff. Locally-sourced materials (including Buckingham slate and local kyanite) as well as non-toxic, flexible furnishings that accommodate movement enhance the educational experience and support the overall health of building inhabitants.
